Başak Kadem

Born in Istanbul in 1978, the artist graduated from the Painting Department of Marmara University, Faculty of Fine Arts, where she studied in Hüsamettin Koçan’s studio. She later began working on Ottoman miniature art with Turkish miniature artist Taner Alakuş.
Her artistic practice is inspired by Uyghur Buddhist manuscripts, mural frescoes, and 15th-century miniatures by Mehmet Siyah Kalem. Working on a small scale, she brings together various techniques, including Japanese woodblock printing (Ukiyo-e), Chinese ink painting, and traditional Turkish miniature methods.
With meticulous craftsmanship, she creates utopian landscapes that occasionally verge on abstraction. Through variations in line—thin and thick, dense and sparse—she constructs tonal balance in depictions of mountains and lakes. Influenced by Zen, Taoism, and Sufism, as well as Sufi poetry, her work explores the subjectivity of time and the experience of “being in the moment,” inviting the viewer into a fictional space that extends beyond perceived reality.
